AMP Unveils the Jeep Grand Cherokee EV in Detroit

You've probably noticed a lot more all-electric vehicles hitting the streets today. Which is really great for the environment as well as the automotive industry as this technology improves and becomes more widely available. The thing is, when you're dedicated to a certain brand or a certain model, like many of the drivers we see in Papa's Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, the wait for an eco-friendly variant can seem like ages. But we have good news, Jeep fans and loyalists: testing has begun on an all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee EV!

You know what the best part about this EV is? It doesn't look like an EV. Aside from the "100% Electric" badging on the side, it looks like the classic Jeep Grand Cherokee we all know and love. And, it's easy on the environment.

Only one test model has been built so far, but early reviews are good. The Amp Electric Jeep Grand Cherokee accelerates smoothly, performs similarly to the gasoline-powered Grand Cherokee, and has an all-electric range of 80 to 100 miles. The two Remy motors powering the Amp Grand Cherokee generate about 152 kilowatts, and can power the car from 0-60 in under ten seconds.

According to early reports, the EV SUV will sell for $57,000 with two-wheel drive or $59,400 when equipped with four-wheel-drive. That's not counting the maximum federal income tax credit of $7,500 for EV vehicles. Online reservations are already underway, and Amp Chief Executive Jim Taylor says the company will start selling the Grand Cherokee to fleets as early as late summer.

Taylor also says, "With the addition of the AMP Jeep EV to our product line-up, we are continuing our strategy of beginning with an already great vehicle which we then electrify for retail and fleet customers who are looking for a zero emission vehicle and, in this case, maintain the benefits of an up-level SUV package."1

Will you see the AMP Jeep Grand Cherokee EV at Papa's Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram sometime in the future? It's always possible. Be sure to stay tuned with us for the latest Jeep news and model updates.
